Should the Rug be centered to the room, or to the furniture?
Although there really are no rules when it comes to personalizing your unique space, here are some guidelines to help you determine the size and shape of your area rug in different room settings.
In a bedroom setting, the rug can be placed either entirely under the bed or under the front two-thirds of the bed.
In living rooms, for open floor plans, it is recommended that the rug is large enough to fit completely under all four legs of the furniture. For smaller spaces where the couch and chairs are placed against the wall, the front legs of the furniture can either sit on the rug or off the rug completely.
In some settings, a round or oval shape might make sense based on the space and furniture.
Another thing to consider, is the finishing material to use for edging the rug, polyester standard tape is a synthetic tape sewn around the edge of the rug and shows approximately 1/4" on face. A serged edge that forms a continuous wrap of yarn around the edges of the rug adds a nice touch.
